Position as doctoral student

Summary of the Higher Education Ordinance

  • Only a person accepted to third-cycle studies may get a position as a doctoral student.
  • The position as doctoral student is designated for full-time. If a doctoral student requests it, then the position can be part-time, yet not less than 50 % of full-time. The maximum amount of 20 % of a full-time position can be used for other duties than studies (teaching, administration). Overtime is not allowed.
  • Service within the department can be a part of the duties for those who has doctoral studentship (employment as a doctoral student). Not all students do service.
  • A position as doctoral student is in effect until further notice, but not longer than a set date and never more than one year after the completion of a thesis. The first period may last one year at the most. The position is renewed two years at a time at the most.
  • A person may in all be employed as a doctoral student for eight years. The total time of employment cannot be longer than full-time studies for four years. A reduction is made for the time of study that the student has not been employed.
The total period of employment may, however, exceed that stated in the third paragraph if special grounds exist. Such grounds may comprise leave of absence because of illness, leave of absence for service in the defence forces or an elected position in a trade union or student organisation, or parental leave.
